Seller's Note/ Roman military wore cloaks known as paenula, an oval piece of woolen cloth with a central hole for the head; think a Roman poncho. Such cloaks were not generally fastened with a brooch but rather with these types of fasteners sewn to one side and toggles sewn on the other side. As seen in our example, the reverse was sewn onto the cloak and then the toggle was inserted through the loop to hold the cloak together.
