Ave!
Lamp, Bronze, ca. 1st-3rd Cent, LOOK!
Copper alloy; 11 CM or 4 1/4 inches / 236gm or 8.3 oz!
Con/ Flame reflector missing, otherwise, As Cast. Eye-pleasing green and brown patina. No bronze disease!
Seller's Note/ The shape and size of this massive lamp is similar to those found in the Balkans, with only two holes, one for the wick and the other for filling. Of further curiosity, is that this lamp was never designed for hanging via chains as is often seen. Note in the photos that the two equidistant lugs on the top were never drilled to hold the previously mentioned chains. The filler lid, when arrived, was fused to the hole but has been released.
Due to the size and heft, an expensive lamp like this would have been used to light the rooms of a wealthy Roman provincial villa for many years, perhaps even for generations of the family.
Of even more consequence, this lamp may have been from the very same wealthy villa as another similar lamp sold on NRC, as it was found in the same field!
