Ave!
Gourd Art, Maya, Tortured Captives, Bonampak
Size/ 14 inches X 8 inches
Composition/ Painted and sealed with a clear coat matte; corded and suitable for wall hanging.
Seller's Note/ Nearly until the mid-20th Century many, if not all, Maya scholars firmly believed that the ancient Maya were a peaceful society led by astronomer priests, as very few of their extremely complicated hieroglyphs has yet to be translated and all of them appeared to be about time-keeping and the movement of the stars.
But in 1946 archeologists entered the vine-ladened and crumbling stone three-roomed structure at Bonampak, discovering that all the room walls were covered with murals, painted in an exquisite style and they were dumb-founded by they saw in Room 2. It was all about warfare. The Maya scholars then had all their previous beliefs turned upside down!
Sheri has taken the liberty to slightly decrease the mural size and add the suitable coloring as found on the now cleaned and restored mural. As seen, a captive, fingers dripping blood (finger-nails having been tore off) pleads for mercy from the Bonampak lords, all dressed in jaguar dress and military regalia.
