Ave!

Celtic, Votive or Effigy, Face with Curly Hair, ca. 3rd-1st Cent BC

Lead; 22mm/13.9gm

Con/ Minor plow damage, otherwise, as cast; the reverse is flat and unadorned, original lead patina. In hand, all the facial details are readily seen; curly hair, eyes and eyebrows, nose (plow-flattened) and mouth.

Seller's Note/ Such Celtic votive/effigy artifacts are quite rare; this is only the second one we have ever received over 25 years. The symbolism of the face is moot; a Celtic god or goddess? And why the curly hair? Ground-found in a small Celtic settlement south of the River Drava, this enigmatic and charming ancient artifact is truly beautiful in hand.
