Con/ broken in half ???

Seller's Note/ My goodness, what a very curious artifact...and I have no clue whatsoever as to what it may be, nor the meaning of the image.

Repoussé, this very strange image was hammered into relief from the reverse side. No matter which way I view it, the imagery makes no sense. But as appears to have been broken in half, perhaps it would be clearer if entire. So, what could be? Maybe a belt plate of some sort, but I seriously doubt it. Perhaps it was affixed to a small box or book?

The mysterious symbology is almost, if not, Gnostic in form, relating to knowledge, especially esoteric mystical knowledge.
