Avar, Belt Plate, c. 6th-7th Century AD

Copper alloy; 24mm / 3.5gm

Con/ As fabricated; both attachment rivets and washers, missing pendent; green patina with dragonesque motif, cleaned and waxed.

Seller's Note/ The Avars loved their bling and this is no exception. Such plates were affixed to the back of their belts and would flash, making a jingling sound, as they rode merrily along. 

Imagine the jolly and jingling Avars sweeping into your town or village...and burning it to the ground.
