Ave!
Avar, Strap End, Open work, c. 6th-7th Cent AD
Copper alloy; 36mm/5.2gm
Con/ As Cast: traces of original gold gilt, attachment rivet in place
Sellers Note/ This beautiful strap end features wonderful sinuosity, nearly in Celtic style, with a floral motif. Rare in this sublime condition. As noted before, the Avar's liked lots of shiny adornments, the more the better!
A number straps were attached to their belts, which in turn hung down and created a flashy bling as they rode their horses into battle. This is certainly one of such uber flashy strap ends.
