Ave!
Celtic, Shield Boss, ca. 4th-3rd Cent. BC, Rare!
Copper alloy; 50mm/16.0gm
Con/ A few edge breaks, otherwise, As Cast; green patina.
Description/ Shaped somewhat like a witches pointed hat with two holes for nailing to the shield. About the rim, a series of repousse dots.
Seller's Note/ Unlike a Roman shield boss, Celtic bosses, like their shields, were much, much smaller. Round and constructed from thin wood, they were then covered with hard leather and tacked onto the surface and then boss applied. Due to the nature of wood and leather which quickly disintegrates underground, all that remains is the boss.
Ground-found in and ancient Celtic settlement south of the River Drava.
