Belt Mount, Avars, Zoomorphic Horse/Dragon, c. 6th-7th Cent

Zoomorphic Dragon Open-work Belt Plate, c. 1st-2nd Cent

Copper alloy; 34mm/6.3gm

Con/ a bit degraded but still a very nice example.

The Avars loved their bling. At first glance, the figure appears to be a kneeling horse, but looking closer, you can see that is has two tails above (or a tail and a wing?) and talons rather than hooves.

Is this a horse, dragon, griffin, or another monster from Celtic legends? Your guess is as good as ours.
