Ave!
Danube Celts, AR Tetradrachm, Sirmium, 2nd Cent BC
Silver; 24mm/10.8gm Struck ca. 200 BC.
Con/ Sharp and well-centered in high relief on good quality silver and darkly toned. Struck on a somewhat misshapen flan, otherwise, about Extremely Fine.
Obv/ Stylized bust of Zeus, laurelate and bearded, to right.
Rev/ Stylized horse prancing left, forefoot raised and dot below horse's muzzle.
Seller's Note/ Beginning about 250 BC, the Danubian Celtic tribes began to imitate the images on the coins of King Philip II and Alexander the Great but in their own particular style. Celtic images on coins are always delightful and this one is a real gem. The crisp image of Zeus and the extraordinarily superb example of a Celtic horse are both truly magnificent.
Sirmia was a fertile region of the Pannonian Plain in Europe, between the Danube and Sava rivers. Today, it is divided between Serbia in the east and Croatia in the west.
