Founded in the 8th Century BC Tarentum was Sparta's only colony. Endowed with a splendid harbor and rich hinterland Tarentum became the most important Greek city in Southern Italy during the 5th and 4th centuries. An ancient tradition tells how Taras, the founder of the first settlement on the site later to become known as Tarentum, was miraculously saved from shipwreck by the intervention of his father Poseidon, who sent a dolphin opon whose back he was carried to shore.
Another iconic coin from Ancient Greece, with the famous 'Boy on a Dolphin' image... Sheri and I, being scuba divers are down with that! We've had many opportunites to dive with wild dolphins, and have always found them curious and friendly. We consider them our 'Ocean Brothers'. Could this really have happened, Taras beging rescued by a dolphin or is simply an ancient legend? Our multiple experiances with diving with dolphins says yes., why not.
