Let's just imagine...

It is dawn. The Roman legions are positioned to the south, facing over-whelming numbers of the German tribes in the north.  The legions stand in place, taunting the Germans while firing arrows and balista points. The Germans charge forward to meet the Romans, now certain of a crushing victory! But at the last moment, they discover the Roman cavalry is suddenly charging from the west onto their unprotected right flank, out of the forest and into the sunlight, ten thousand strong, and each horse with dozens of these eye-blinding adornments reflecting in the sun! Wow!
