Roman Cavalry Prick Spur, c. 2nd-3rd Cent AD

Copper alloy; approx. 160mm/14.7gm

Rivets at each end were used fasten the spur to the cavalryman's leather boot and trace remains of the iron prick are seen in the central hole.  The hook, which went at the top, was for a strap or lace which went around the boot and served to keep the spur from flopping down.   

 

Con/ Sound with green patina, hook still intact, slightly plow bent and one end missing.
