Strap Slide, Enameled, 1st-3rd Cent.

Ave!

Strap Slide, Enameled, 1st-3rd Cent.

Copper alloy; 25mm/8.6gm

Con/ Intact, cleaned and waxed; traces of blue and green enameling on outer circle, tiny tesserae pattern withing inner circle.

Seller's Note/ As you all know, enameling on ancient artifacts degrades in the earth as seen in the outer circle of this strap slide. But in this case the the vestiges of tiny tesserae (red, white and blue) in the inner circle are still intact. Imagine if you will, how difficult and time-consuming it was to glue each different colored tesserae into a specific pattern. This enameled strap slide had to have been quite expensive and was certainly worn by a Roman officer or a wealthy citizen. Be sure to click the "images" tab for a close up!

Rare in this condition and perfect for serious collectors.
