Strap End, Winged Phallus, 1st-3rd Cent.

Ave!

Strap/Belt End, Winged Phallus, 1st-3rd Cent.

White metal; 27mm/4.6gm

Con/ as cast; attachment bar intact, cleaned and waxed

Ref/ None

Seller's Note/ The symbology of the Winged Phallus goes back to Egyptian through the Roman era. Such phalli were not only worn for good luck but also to ward off curses and other evil influences.

Our example is rather extraordinary in a number of ways: 1st- It is cast, not with a copper alloy, but rather in some sort of white metal (lead mixed with tin?). 2nd - It is not a pendent but rather a belt end.

Please note in the photo how the smith went to great ends to represent the wings with designs to either side. Very Rare.
