Ave!

FELIX VTERE, Belt End, Letter V, Rare!

Copper alloy; 29mm/7.3gm

Con/ Broken, otherwise, about As Cast; glossy dark patina with original silvering; two attachment rivets on the back.

Seller's Note/ FELIX VTERE roughly translates to "Use with Good Luck/Fortune."

From the late 2nd to the mid 3rd century lettered belt sets, especially the famous VTERE FELIX type, were very popular with Roman soldiers. They are most commonly found in the middle and lower Danube regions and in Dacia. These sets consisted of individual letters which were attached to the belt with rivets on their reverse. The most common types actually spelled out FELIX  (buckle) VTERE when the belt was with an a longer leather strap to connect both, though (buckle) VTERE FELIX when the belt was off. Clear enough?

If not, see the see the further photos.
