Ave!

C. Malleolus, Denarius, Mars with Warrior reverse

AR; 18mm/4.0gm     Rome ca. 96 BC

Con/ Crisply struck to either side with fresh dies and lustrous, with a wonderful image of Mars; slightly o/c on the reverse, otherwise, Very Fine.

Obv/ Helmeted head of Mars right; mallet (malleolus) above, mark of value below chin.

Rev/ CMA; Warrior (obviously naked) holding spear and shield, with right foot on cuirasse, standing left before trophy; prow to right.

Ref/ Crawford 335/3b; Sydenham 615

Seller's Note/ OMG! Note how the Moneyer, C. Malleolus, only added his initials (CMA) to the reverse? That was because he added the mallet above Mars on the obverse, creating a pun on his name! Just goes to show that he had a awesome sense of humor!
