Ave!

Brooch, Celtic/Romano, Trumpets, Silver c. 2nd Cent AD

Silver alloy; 35mm/6.8gm

Con/ Missing pin, spring and insets, otherwise, As Cast and Fabricated.

Seller's Note/ We have presented such Celtic trumpet brooches in the past, but this is the First Time listing such a trumpet brooch cast in silver! As seen in the photo, there are three circular open areas filled with ancient solder (not glue) that would have affixed added silver (?) ornaments now sadly missing. As nearly all such trumpet brooches were cast in copper alloy, we can only conjecture that the owner was an officer wealthy enough to wear such a prestigious and valuable brooch.

When the Romans began to assimilate the local Pannonian and Dalmatian Celtic warriors into their Legions during the 1st-2nd century, they brought their own influences as per belt adornments and brooches as well. This particular brooch emulates their ancient carnyx battle horn they blew before battles during the Iron Age, between c. 200 BC and c. 200 AD.
