Ave!
Ring, Medieval, Men's, Wings, Star & Moons Intaglio, ca. 11th-16th Cent
Copper alloy; 9.8gm, Ring size 8 1/2
Con/ As Cast and Engraved; superb and glossy dark green patina; wearable.
Seller's Note/ What the heck is going on here? As seen in the photo, the hand-engraved bezel features a pair of wings spread in flight surmounted by an eight-pointed star; below, two crescent moons and a large single wing; on both sides of the band are what appears to be growing crops.
We believe that this same "wings, star, moons and growing crops" motif reflects the exact same symbolism found on similar rings, but just in a different manner as viewed by the craftsman who created this ring.
This ring was found in the very same farm fields as similar 'walking stork motif' rings also presented in our shop. But why such walking storks? In medieval times, as well as now, storks were a symbol of good luck, longevity, and when they returned to their nests it was Spring and time to plant your crops.
