Maya Tribute Terracotta Olmec Head
45mm/22.7gm
Provenance/ Coba, Yucatan, Mexico, ca. 8th-14th Century AD
The ancient Maya revered the earlier Olmec culture, so much so that they replicated their images in pottery as burial items. This small Olmec-style head was certainly attached to a larger piece.
Seller's Note/ This artifact was presented to us and we offered money for it, but the seller had no interest...as he had no resource for the same to spend it. A year later we returned and presented him a brand new machete in a leather sheath...and we made the deal.
