Ave!
Applique, Vessel Adornment, Water Fowl, c. 2nd Cent AD
Copper alloy; 44mm/27.6gm
Con/ about As Cast; cleaned and waxed. Original soldering is seen on the reverse.
Description/ Head of a water fowl, perhaps a goose, with two torque-like rings about its neck. Celtic influence?
Seller's Note/ As seen in the photo, this adornment would have been soldered onto the lip of a large copper alloy serving bowl, facing inwards. Most likely two or more would also have been soldered about the rim. This is a very rare, perhaps unique, artifact; you'll never see another one like it, trust me. Perhaps from a wine-mixing bowl in the villa of a wealthy family in Romano/Gallo provincial Pannonia.
