Rev/ B.V. MARIA IMMACOLATA - 8 DIC. 1854 PIO IX -, below; Virgin Mary, crowned and radiate, holding Christ Child.
Seller's Note/ Pius IX was a Marian pope, who in his encyclical Ubi primum emphasized Mary's role in salvation. In 1854, he promulgated the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, articulating a long-held Catholic belief that Mary, the Mother of God, was conceived without original sin. Sometime during the papacy of Leo XIII (1878-1903), he had this coin struck to commemorate his predecessor's memory, hence the date 1854.
