Ave!

Key Ring, circa 1st-3rd Cent AD

Copper alloy; band width 19mm/8.4gm - Ring size 7 3/4

Con/ as cast; remarkable and eye-pleasing green patina; cleaned and waxed. XX on the band. Wearable.

A truly wonderful example of a key-ring that was used to keep things secret and safe by well-to-do ancient Romans and this one was certainly used for a small box or cabinet.

As you all know, nearly all so-called 'key rings' were worn on a chain or strap about the neck, and not as a true ring. Our example is the antithesis of the before; it was designed to be worn as a real ring.

Who wore this ring? Perhaps by a lady to protect her precious jewery or perfumes from her slaves? Or by the man of the house to guard valuable coins and documents? It's all conjecture and we'll never know.

Either way, our example is quite rare and perfect for discerning collectors.
