Bronze Age Trade Axe, Urnfield Culture c. 1000-800 BC
Copper alloy; 62mm/20.6gm
Con/ Original glossy green patina; purposely broken in antiquity as a sacrifice to the Celtic gods.
From a small hoard of axes and sword hilts found near the Danube River. Such hoards were often deposited near rivers and wet places like swamps. As these spots were often quite inaccessible, they most probably represent gifts to the gods.
A very rare and beautiful artifact...and certainly under-priced.
