Ave!

Brooch, Composite Plate, Zoomorphic, c. 2nd Cent, Very Rare!

Copper alloy; 44mm/6.8 gm

Con/ Missing pin, otherwise, as fabricated. Cleaned and waxed for preservation.

Ref/ Hattatt 1614

Seller's Note/ First, what appears to be blue enameling in the center is not; it's actually blue glass. Why zoomorphic? Look close at the ends of the brooch and you will see what appears to be the heads of a Celtic-styled dog or wolf. This brooch was certainly created by Romano-Celtic smiths as we have seen the same puppy dog/wolf motif before in similar artifacts created in the Roman provinces of Pannonia and Moesia.
