Bell, Medieval, c. 16th-17th Cent, Sweet Chimes!
Copper alloy, 22mm/3.6gm
Con/ As fabricated; lovely green patina with original bead, cleaned and waxed
Seller's Note/ Since childhood, we have all been familiar with such small bells but did you know that this form of bell with four bent ends had its infancy beginning in the 16th Century? Such small bells were made using thin sheets of copper alloy shaped into four wedges near the bottom. They were then bent and curved and, before the final closer, a small copper alloy bead was added to allow the bell to chime.
Excellent for bell collectors or a Christmas Tree decoration.
