Septimius Severus, Denarius, Annona reverse

AR; 19mm/3.0gm   Rome Mint c. 197-198 AD

Con/ slightly off-center on the reverse, otherwise, about Extremely Fine. A lovely coin with a magnificent portrait

Obv/ L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP X; laureate head right

Ref/ ANNONAE AVGG; Annona standing left, holding grain sheaves and cornucopia, foot on prow.

Ref/ RIC Vol 4a, 107 (S. Severus)

Seller's Note/ Annona was the Roman goddess of the wheat-harvest, and more particularly, the tutelary deity overseeing the vital grain imports from Africa...hence the prow on the reverse.
