Ave!

Scythia, Pendent, Hermes, c. 7th- 4th Cent BC, Extremely Rare!

Cast Lead; 37mm/11.2gm (Pendent 21mm)

Con/ As Cast; beautiful and eye-pleasing oxidized lead patina. The reverse is flat and unadorned.

Description/ Male head wearing a wide-brimmed hat (Petasos?) with circles of dots about.

Seller's Note/ Doesn't look much like a pendent, does it? That is because it was never finished! Note the large blog of lead at the top. That should have been cut off leaving a post. Once all off the mold sprue was trimmed/filed away, the post would have been bent downwards to the back, creating a loop. Whether or not the head represents Hermes is moot...but whom else wore such a hat?

Ground-found in Ukraine, near the ancient Scythian city of Gota (Olbia) on the fringes of ancient Greece. After exhaustive searches, we have discovered nothing like this.
