Ave!

Pommel, Long Sword, Crusader Era, ca.11th-14th Cent

Copper alloy; 48mm x 36mm x 20mm/ 211 gm or 7.4oz!

Con/ Missing sword blade, of course, otherwise, As Cast; warm green patina, remnant of iron sword tang above

Provenance/ Ground found in North-eastern Croatia.

Seller's Note/ Such long swords had a long blades (see the 2nd photo) and to use them effectively in battle, they needed a heavy pommel as a counterbalance.

So, who was the warrior knight who carried this sword remnant and where was he from? Hard to say, but most likely he was from Hungary is our best surmise.

Who was he fighting against and what may have happened to him? Again, it could have been any random battle against who knows whom? But, when the Mongols (Yes, the Mongols, for God's sake!) invaded Croatia, ca.1241 AD, the Hungarian Army, led by King Béla IV, fought back! Although he survived the invasion, the Mongols devastated the country before their unexpected withdrawal in March 1242.

All above is simple conjecture on our part, but wouldn't be grand if the knight lost his sword in battle against the Mongols...and lived to fight another day?
