Marcus Aurelius, Denarius, Minerva reverse, Ancient Forgery!

Silver Plated; 18mm/2.7gm    Rome mint, c. 149-150 AD?

Con/ about Very Fine

Obv/ AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII F; Laur. bust right

NOT! This obverse has no PII F. Instead, PIII only.

Rev/ TR POT III COS II; Minerva standing right, holding shield and hurling javelin

NOT! Instead, it clearly reads TR POT VIIII and Minerva stands left, holding spear and leaning on shield.

Ref/ RIC Vol III 450b...sort of.

Seller's Note/ This is an excellent example of an ancient forgery where the celators were so close to the original...but got it wrong.
