Ave!

Septimius Severus, Denarius, Arabia Victory Reverse

AR; 19mm/3.4gm   Rome Mint c. 195 AD

Con/ Struck on a short flan, otherwise, about Very Fine.

Obv/ L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP V; laureate head right.

Ref/ ARAB ADIAB COS II PP; Victory walking left holding wreath and trophy.

Ref/ RIC Vol IVa, 58 (S. Severus)

Seller's Note/ Another example of an obscure reverse legend that refers to Severus' victory against Niger, another wanna-be-emperor. To obscure that his victory was actually a Civil War, Severus spun his victory as being over the Arabians and the Adiabenians, who aided Niger's cause, and were indeed punished by further punitive expeditions.
