Ave!

Brooch, Roman, Enameled Peacock, 1st-3rd Cent., Extraordinarily Rare!

Copper alloy backing; 40mm/16.3gm!

Con/ Missing pin and minor loss of the white enameling, otherwise, As Fabricated.

Description/ On a background of brilliant and glossy blue, the peacock is enameled in white, standing left, tail feathers closed. Above, grape vines with two leaves, also in white. As seen in the larger photo, the peacock is encircled with a darker enameling (possibly oxidized silver alloy?) as are the vine tendrils and the peacocks feet.

Seller's Note/ This brooch is truly jaw-dropping masterpiece and NRC has never seen or presented one of this size nor as magnificent. Despite the missing pin, it should be considered as worthy of any museum you can name and will be a real gem in your collection.
