Ave!
Ragusa City Issue, Æ Grosso, Christ Standing, St Blasius reverse!
Æ; 19mm/1.5gm Ragusa City issue, struck 1770.
Con/ A well centered example of this scarce coin with a dark brown patina and coppery highlights. Soft strike to left on the reverse, otherwise, Very Fine.
Obv/ No legend; Jesus Christ, nimbate, standing facing, right hand raised in benediction, left hand holding globus cruciger, stars and city coats of arms to either side.
Rev/ RAGVSII CIVITAS - 1770; Saint Blasius, wearing mitre, raising right hand in benediction above the city walls.
Seller's Note/ St Blasius was the patron saint of the medieval city of Ragusa, modern day Dubrovnik, and his statues are found everywhere within the enormous city walls. Our example is an excellent representative of the money that was struck and circulated in late 18th century. Ragusa city issues are highly desirable for any collector of 18th Century hammered coins, especially in this condition.
