Ave!
Celtic, Male Statuette, Talisman, ca. 4th century BC-1st century AD, RARE!
Copper Alloy; 57mm/25.0gm
Con/ A remarkable example with a pale green patina. Missing head and a few old scratches, otherwise, As Cast.
Seller's Notes/ This bronze figurine of a naked warrior (?) features no arms at all and, perhaps, was purposely cast without them. Unlike the clear break of the missing head (plow damage?), the shoulders are smooth and rounded with zero traces of any breakage whatsoever. Also, if you look closely at the final photo, you will spot another very clear break on the penis above the testicles. Most likely he was originally cast ithyphallic. FYI - Ithyphallic refers to representations of deities or figures with an erect penis, symbolizing fertility and potency.
Most likely, this was carried in a pouch by a Celtic warrior as a talisman to bring him good luck and ward off evil influences. Talismanic describes objects, signs, or actions believed to possess magical, supernatural, or protective powers, often used to avert evil or bring good fortune.
