Ave!
Roman-era Table Knife Handle, c. 2nd-3rd Cent., Beautiful!
Copper alloy; 50mm/28.7gm.
Con/ Missing iron blade, otherwise, As Cast; Beautiful red-brown and green patina.
Description/ As presented in the photo, this octagonal-sided plinth-shaped handle has a flat botton and grooves at the stop where the blade would have been attached.
Seller's Note/ All such Roman table knife utensil's were designed with a flat bottom so they could be stood on end, blades facing up on the table. In nearly every case with such knife handles, just the vestiges of the iron blades remain due to so many years of corrosion in the ground. A beautiful reminder that even in the Roman provinces of Dalmatia and Moesia Superior, there was still decorum in middle-class Roman homes.
