Gordian III, Sestertius, Jupiter reverse

Æ; 30mm/21.6gm     Rome, 4th Series, Struck 241-243 A.D.

Con/ Perfectly centered with crisp legends, handsome portrait on the obverse. Struck slightly off center on the reverse, otherwise, Very Fine. Dark brown patina with coppery highlights.

Obv/ IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG; laur, dr. and cuir. bust right.

Rev/ IOVI STATORI; Jupiter stg. facing, head right, holding long scepter in left hand holding and thunderbolt close to his body.

Seller's Note/ One of the titles given to Jupiter was Stator as seen on this issue. STATOR basically translates to "Slayer of armies about to flee". The reverse alludes to Gordian's campaign in Persia where the enemy were compelled to flee back to Mesopotamia.
