L Appuleius Saturninus, Denarius, Saturn in Quadriga reverse

AR; 19mm/3.6gm      Rome - c. 104 BC

Con/ An excellent example of this scarce issue! Very Fine.

Obv/ Head of Roma left, wearing winged helmet and pearl necklace.

Rev/ Saturn in fast quadriga charging right, holding reins in left hand and harpa in right hand. Control mark • V • above; L. SATVRN in exergue.

Ref/ Crawford 317 variety. Syd 578.

Seller's Note/ This is one of the very few Roman Republic denarius that features Roma head left!

A Harpa was an agricultural implement with a hooked extension, similar to a sickle or scythe, used by Saturn and shown with him on Republican coins. Also, when adapted as a hand weapon, it was the type of sword used by Perseus to kill Medusa. Gnarly!
