Agriculture, Sickle, Iron, 2nd-3rd Cent, Uber Rare! USA Customers Only!

Iron; 26CM/0.25 kilo or 9 1/2 inches/ 8.8oz

Con/ Large split in the socket, otherwise, about As Cast. Very well preserved with a beautiful red and brown iron patina.Conserved but NOT waxed.

Seller's Note/ Despite the gnarly-appearing condition, this sickle is extremely rare and is museum worthy. But why, you ask? In nearly every case, iron buried in the earth for centuries, simply disintegrates and leaves no reminder other a red smear of rust. Fortunately, this particular sickle was discovered deep in a wet and muddy anaerobic environment (an absence of free oxygen) that allowed it to remain in such spectacular condition.

This socketed Roman farming sickle—known in Latin as the falx—is a curved iron hand-tool used primarily to harvest cereal crops like wheat and barley, cut tall grasses, manage reeds, etc.
