Ave!
Shield Boss, Matched Pair, c. 3rd-4th Cent AD, Rare
Copper alloy; Each at 69mm x 22mm x 3mm / 32gm
Con/ The boss seen right in the photos is slightly bent, otherwise, as cast; beautiful glossy and nearly unblemished green patina; outside cleaned and waxed.
Description/ Four tiers with concentric circle patterns about; four attachment holes with peened pins, at c. 6mm
Seller's Note/ As these two shield bosses (umbos) are perfect match in every manner, they without any doubt came from the same manufactory. They could have been attached to a pair of smaller cavalry shields, or have been part of a quartet of umbos affixed about a much bigger boss on a larger infantry mans shield. Because they were found in close proximity, the latter explanation is more likely.
Matching umbos are so rare it's nearly unheard of; this is a one time opportunity for you to add these to your Roman military collection!
