Antoninus Pius, As, Elephant Reverse, Rare!

Æ; 28mm/10.2gm          Rome mint ca. 148-149 AD

Con/ Well-centered with a warm brown patina, complete legends, handsome portrait of the emperor and a very sharp elephant. Struck on a somewhat short misshapen flan, otherwise, Very Fine.

Obv/ ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XII; laureate head right.

Rev/ MVNIFICENTIA AVG; cuirassed elephant standing right; [COS IIII SC] in two lines in exergue.

Seller's Note/ Pius struck this wonderful issue in reference to the games held in celebration of the 900th anniversary of Rome. The reverse legend = The generosity of the emperor.
