Ave!
Augustus, Dupondius, Commemorative Issue, struck under Caligula
Æ Dupondius; 29mm/14.0 gm Mint of Rome, ca. 37-41 AD
Con/ A lovely coin with a warm brown patina, full legend and a fine portrait on the obverse; some roughness and partial legend on the reverse, otherwise, about Very Fine.
Obv/ DIVVS•AVGVSTVS; radiate head left; S-C across fields.
Rev/ CONSENSV•SENAT•ET•EQ•ORDIN•P•Q•R•; Divine Augustus, laureate and togate, holding olive branch and globe, seated left on curule chair.
Ref/ RIC Vol I 56 (Caligula)
Seller's Note/ The reverse legend equates to "With the consent of the Senate, the Equities, and by the Order of the People of Rome." This issue was certainly struck in the first year of Caligula's reign...as he was still sucking up to the senate. LOL!
A scarce coin, kids, only one found on V-Coins!
