Roman Zoomorphic Lioness Casket Leg, c. 1st-3rd Cent AD

Solid Copper alloy, 10CM/109 (!) 

Con/ Negligible traces of corrosion, otherwise, As Cast and Engraved. A magnificent example with a dark green and brown patina.

Description/ The head and upper body of a lioness, jaws open with a protruding tongue, surmounting a leg and paw on an oval base. Crisply engraved floral decorations on a square fitting at the top for attachment.

Seller's Note/ This lioness cabinet stand was once connected to the bottom of a small ornate cabinet or box as one of four legs. Such a cabinet would have adorned the villa a very wealthy Roman family.

30+ years in this business and we have never seen such a wonderful and delightful artifact in such sublime condition nor at such a large size and weight. Another excellent addition to your Roman artifact collection.
