Ave!
Miniature Book Cover, Walls and Towers, c. 15th-17th Cent.
Copper alloy; 24mm/1.9gm
Con/ Some loss of silvering, otherwise, As Fabricated.
Description/ Massive arched doors with elaborate iron henges, flanked by a crenulated circular wall constructed of stone on rocky ground. Behind, three towers; to left, two pellets above and below a star; to right, five pellets above and below a crescent moon.
Seller's Note/ At only the size of a postage stamp, the exquisite details are truly mind-boggling. Ground found in a field south of the Drava River in Croatia, the image must certainly represent a local Medieval castle or fortification...but which one? Sadly, with all the Mongol and Ottoman Turk invasions, nearly all were destroyed...or simply fell apart through disuse.
