Ave!

L. Rubrius Dossenus, Quinarius, Neptune with Victory reverse, WOW!

AR Quinarius; 13mm/1.8gm.   Rome Mint - 87 BC.

Con/ Struck on a tight flan, otherwise, about Extremely Fine.

Obv/ Laureate head of Neptune right, DOSSEN & trident behind.

Rev/ Victory depicted standing upright with an arched back, positioned before an altar around which a serpent is entwined.; to left, L • RVBRI.

Ref/ Crawford 384/4; Syd. 708.

Seller's Note/ This is truly a magnificent example of this rare issue, but why is the serpent entwined alter depicted on the reverse?  It is clearly a reference to Salus, of course, because Salus was the Roman goddess of safety, health, and welfare, representing both individual well-being and the prosperity of the state.
