Ave!

Brooch, Camp Gate, Openwork, 3rd-4th Cent Rare!

Copper alloy; 22mm/7.0gm

Con/ Missing spring and pin, otherwise, as fabricated; black patina with bright high-lights of original tinning; cleaned, not waxed

Ref/ Not listed in Hattatt

Seller's Note/ The pattern of this one story brooch emulates the gates to a Roman camp, watch tower, fortress, or a city gate. In the accompanying photo, note the four watch-fire turrets at the top, exactly as seen on this brooch.

Such "camp gate" brooches are extremely rare, folks; this is only the 3rd one we have ever presented.
